At our upcoming General Meeting on 13th February, we will host a guest speaker, Chris Kelley.
Chris Kelley will present an overview of a marine disaster in Tonga which claimed the lives of 74 people. The inter-island ferry, MV Princes Ashika capsized and sank at 23.50 hours on 5th August 2009 in Tongan waters near the island of Nomuka. Of the 96 passengers and 32 crew on board, no women or children survived the sinking, nobody donned a life jacket and not one life raft was launched. The Tongan Police Commander at that time (and former Dunedin Detective Inspector) Chris Kelley commanded the rescue co-ordination in Tonga and will now share his story. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please meet in the foyer of the Dunedin Central Police Station at 7pm. |
