On Wednesday 8th April, two kayakers set off from Waihola to kayak to Taieri Mouth. Once reaching Taieri Mouth, they made the decision to carry on over the notorious bar to play in the surf.
Little did they know they would soon be spending over 2 hours in the freezing cold water while members of Dunedin Marine Search and Rescue, conducted a full scale search for them. The Otago Rescue Helicopter was called upon and on board, two of our own water rescue squad members. Once located, the two kayakers were winched to safety and transferred to hospital. You can read the article in the Otago Daily Times here And a follow up story from the wife of one of the kayakers Dunedin MSAR loves a good news story, especially when our volunteers can play a part in returning loved ones to their family. Great job by all involved!
